Anyway to cut the lengthy story of the process short, exco of 2011 will be spearheaded by President Chairman Mao Zedong Sonia, with fellow sidekick Roy and Captain Jamon. Under them are: Kaylee (Marketing), Dominic (Fin-Sec), Sherhan (Logistics) and Peter (Amourer).

Okay, interesting combination of personalities to make a fruitful 2011!

I’m proud of say that SMU has outdone itself again the 1st Jamon Invitationals 2010…sadly for the men’s individuals only because no women were around. A mighty strong team of 6 from years 1-3 and different nationalities represented SMU in this mighty event and had a mighty good time with rotating around 2 mighty pistes…

All in all, keeping it mightily sweet and short, it was fruitful. And as the organiser puts it, “It’s very refreshing to have this at the middle of the week at the middle of the day…Let’s have this next week again”.

We look forward to having a great time again at the next Jamon Invitationals 2010. And certainly look forward in seeing a slowER cash flow man flow (but not too slow) between the 2 pistes, lest our legs/arms break.

I think both events made me realised how small and squeezy SMU is, because we have to conduct the clinic and trainings at some un-godforsaken place where, its like a frigging corridor and everyone walks by to get to/away from SOA and SOB.

Anyway this is kinda like some subconscious silent knowledge on my side, which came into my mental light realising NUS has some nice air-conditioned and spacious hall for training. To make our quasi-Singapore-in-a-Singapore-in-a-Singapore matters worse, our training area has been coned off because some one decided to inform the higher-ups that the ceiling above us is being the hazard of the century, and supposedly hence taking another century to repair/reconstruct/rebuild/reengineer. But then again on retrospect, maybe small training grounds isn’t much of a complain; it could’ve been worse being without training space. And I guess that corridor is the best place we could have for training unless we all want to slip and fall and break and die lunging in the lacquered floor of the sports hall, not mentioning the possibility of fighting for space with the other outdoor sports CCA who choose to play their games indoors.

Nevertheless, it’s rather heartening to realise that it’s actually these kinds of small, insignificant and nondescript corridors is where our progresses as fencers were initiated and built upon – sowing the seeds of our basics to the threshing the grains of our techniques. It’s also the same small plot of land where our big achievements have been made possible. And someday as we complete our own journey through the portal of SMU, we’ll look back at remember what frugal yet fruitful lives we led at this little piece of land.

Anyway if you always thought walking from SOB to SOSS took damn long, Vivace vivdly made that true.

Okay I’m going to skip the description of Vivace because we all knew how Vivace went, how roughly knew how it’d had been like. I guess it’ll be more interesting seeing it from the freshies’ point of view. Afterall Vivace was organised for them!

Here’s an encounter with a freshie:

Freshie: Ya la. I’m like some  mobile organic recycle bin. The seniors just come to me and dump pamplets on me.

BT: Oh here’s a sticker for you (pastes fencing sticker on freshie). How’s Vivace?

Freshie: Fishmarket. Noisy and smelly and stuffy and hot even at the air conditioned concourse.

BT: Oh speaking of fishmarket did you sign up for recreational fishing?

Freshie: Oh no I was looking more into competitive fishing but then I guess the waters around Singapore is too polluted to have such an activity. If only the NeWater plant cleans the ocean….

BT: Talking about NeWater the Vivace goodie bag has NeWater!

F: It has Twisties and some potato chips and mentos too. Anyway there was this booth which I don’t remember, which was giving out potatoes. Is it the agriculture society? It’s damn weird, because I dont remember what booth was that but I remembered the potato. Oh yea you have some potatoes at your laptop…

F: Oh gosh, finally a gift made of metal. Thanks! (Voluntarily signs up for fencing clinic.) What’s this clinic about?

BT: It’s a short introduction to fencing. Expect some rudiments to be taught. It’ll be held in school and equipment will be provided. Just come in sports attire and everything’ll be fine.

F: Oh okay. See you there! I’m frigging exctied.

BT: You better be. Buaiz

Preparation for Vivace had been tons funs. We spend yesterday night in school setting up our booth, bruising our fingers in the process of bending some adorable metal blades, and teasing aluminum foil into even more metal blades.

Now, what night would be complete without engaging in at least some form of illegal activity? Yesterday’s activity du jour, took the form of vandalism, or if you’re interested in the details (which I trust you are!), the embellishing of our campus toilet signs! All in the name of livening up our campus grounds, we say! Watch out for these embellished toilet signs around SMU, and if anything, they show you that anybody can fence, even the…um…(to quote one our fencers)…the handicap.

1. Sonia bringing back the individual women’s silver and Men’s Epee Team bringing back the silver too
2. Seeing how the girls have improved so much
3.  Sherman screaming “stab your cb” and sherman eating her sandwich during her 1 min break.
4. Daniel’s winning HKU when it was 44-44 during team semi-finals bout
5. Miracle last bout when Kaiwen caught up 12 points.

We won’t type the usual nondescript people will say like, oh “well done ppl” or whatever, because I think what was more important was that we all had experience and bothered to seed it within ourselves for greater things to come. So, not well done guys, because…. the best is yet to be.  Yes, don’t punch me that’s the best way I can phrase it.

Anyway we had R&R and all that I can recall of HK is their bad service, aircon water dripping into my eye on an average once a day, and the buildings thatlook like if an ah ma fell on it it’ll just collapse on her. I’m sorry I was raised up to be so critical, but urban lifestyle, city planning and maintenance is really important to me. I remember Paris has dog shit all over the place and during winter they have hot steam steaming out of the pavement to keep pedestrian cool and I used to remember how I thought they were steaming sai.

Speaking about sai, school has just started. And we all know that there’s only 1 thing that’s a bigger b*** than bidding, which is attending classes we bidded for. It’s our onus as students to study, but its also our anus that tells us that the person sitting beside me is talking a lot of rubbish for class part.

Anyway for pre-vivace preparations, we did some really great stuff that will put HK’s Ocean Park souvenir shop to shame. And during that day itself the booth will be brighter than Victoria’s Peak at night. Don’t blink.

Anyway to people looking for a new CCA here’s some REAL reasons why anyone should join fencing:

1. Its one of the rare CCA that is under the Sports Excellence Programme. Meaning, you don’t pay for coaching fees, overseas trips are subsidised etc. For CCAs not under the SEP, their members has to pay monthly fees or something along those lines.

2. It’s not expensive. Yes, it amounts to 3 digits but it’s less than 500. And the best thing is that it can last you a long tiime. You aren’t forced to get your own equipment anyway. The school has a supply of blades and suits you can loan from till you want to become a true knight and wear your own suit. It’s recommended that you get your own suits though, it’ll probably cost around 300 or less depending where you buy it from.

3. Newcomers are trained to be pros asap. In fact most members started off as noobs! C/F to above see how pro we’ve become! Also, we don’t have trials or whatsoever. We don’t believe in exclusivity between the best and the better of the best. No one is left behind. Chivalry and knighthood, through and through.

4. It’s a sport that both genders can fight on equal grounds because fencing, essentially is about playing mind games. Fitness is like what makes us last through a match but without a brain, a fencer is a dummy. Which brings us to the point that when you’re old and rheumatism-ed arthritis-y you can still fence. It’s an ageless and beautiful.

5. This entire process of learning to fence will make you understand yourself better and comprehend the decisions you make. All in all you’ll see some character development and discovery. You don’t need to go through camps, go through us, the easy way for a better you!

Knowing these information is like knowing where the shiny gyrados is. Once you know it, you’ll want to catch it damn badly because owning it will just make you a more powerful person.

Other CCAs have their own benefits, but we hope whatever you choose, just make the wise choice.

~still without an internship sigh

ANother semester has passed. A semester that has seen us recruited a handful of female fencers and also the graduation of our year 4 fencers. Young, xuehui and co.

Fencers like Hong Jiun, Ben and co who are on exchange are heavily missed.

SMU fencing will strike back in 3 week’s time. For now, time to hit the books.

Happy lunar new year everyone. Its not that I MIA very long, I keep screwing up the format of the blog entry haha. Two things to update our fencing family. Novices 2010 and Fencing clinic.

Novices 2010

We got 4th for team event. Individual Ghim Liang (aka the flying frog) reached the quarter finals with less than 6mths of experience. The rest faltered at round of 16 and 32.  We were quite disappointed with the result but looking back, it was quite a commendable effort. Most of us only started last year August and it was an improvement compared to last year. Anyway, here are some photos:

SMU fencing team will be sending 7 fencers for this event. This will be the first SMU fencing competition for most of us and we are hopeful that it will be a good start. Do drop by if you are free, your support can make a real difference!
